Welcome to Black's Racing Promotions Little Z Racing Team
|
Black's Racing team was new to Legends car racing in 2000. Jim Black is the driver.
Wife Pat is Team Chief, Videographer, Travel Planner, and Pit Crew. Son Brian is
Crew Chief, Setup Man, Body Man and Web Master. Brian and wife Sally own VacationKids.com.
With their help our team is able to compete in a full schedule of racing. Our home is in
Brodheadsville, Pa. Since Jim is retired this is a full time hobby. Jim has raced
other cars in the past. We chose to race in the Legends car series solely because of
the awesome body styles. The strict regulations which help contain the cost of racing was unknown
at the time and came as an added bonus.
We started late in the 2000 season and only competed in a few events. It was a shocking
season as we found these cars are not easy to drive, the setup is critical and the competition was
top notch. We had engine problems which shortened the season as we were new and had no clue
who could install a valve seat in a Yamaha head.
In 2001 we got a late start because of the old motor. We bought a new sealed motor and started
to get some track time. We raced at The Fairgrounds At Kutztown on Wed. nights and started racing
at Path Valley in July of 2001. We also got a chance to race at Linda's Speedway and Lincoln Speedway
here in Pa. Although we were involved in so many spinouts and wrecks we did get enough track time to
start learning a new driving style and learned some basic chassis setups. In spite of our disastrous
track outings we enjoyed ourselves and Jim finished 15th in the National and 8th in the Pa.state
point standings in the Masters dirt division.
2002 started a new year, with lots of body work and a new paint job on the car. We were
powered by a rebuilt sealed motor by Hank Scott and 600 Racing. Thanks to Kevin Walsh,
Harry Garber, Clay Hair, and others, plus all the books we read we were armed with new
chassis setup information. Again we were plagued by engine problems which cut our season short.
We did start to get the chassis setup dialed in and managed to win a few heat races. In spite
of our shortened season we finished 11th in the National and 6th in the Pa.state
point standings in the Masters dirt division.
2003 Started off with a multitude of rain outs which continued through the season. Unfortunately
we only raced 18 national events and a few local events. Engine problems started popping up and
I mean popping. We almost pulled all of our hair out looking for the problem. More engine problems
came up due to over heating. The head bolts stripped out of the base. We tried several repairs
but came up throwing the towel in.
2004 Our best year yet. We traveled a little and raced at 11 different tracks through out the year.
We had several shinning moments that gave us hope and proved we did improve greatly. We started the season
in March with a new engine. Although we were plagued by gremlin problems, (there has to be ten to fifteen
gremlins in this car to cause as much and varied problems as we had in 2004.) We had to work feverishly
every week to make the races and feverishly at the track to make the feature. Plus we still have the popping
engine problem from time to time and it often showed up at the most inopportune time. All in all
2004 was great. 2005 will be spent suppressing, confusing and out smarting the gremlins. We know who
they are because they are us. Look out 2005 we are coming back.
2005 Starts in the shop. A new red box ignition system revives dead engine. A burned up trailer wheel
bearing on the way to the first race sets the tone for the DNF (loss of brakes and loss of clutch) at
the track.
Were we prepared or what???? Typical junk yard racing preparedness starts the season off with a shadowy
tone. However April 1st, (April fools day) saw us on the pole of the feature by inversion but hard rain
squelched the evening.
April, May, June and the early part of July saw some heavy racing (with many rain outs) and lots of traveling
for the little "Z". Two trips to the Midwest with a rainout in Wisconsin, and two rainouts at Lawrenceburg
in Illinois put a damper on some of our travels. (We won't mention running out of fuel)and more problems
with the trailer and race car almost sent us home from the first Midwest trip early, but thanks to Wagner
Excavating, Mad Max and Gregg fixed us up and we were able to get some racing in. All in all we had a good
time.
July saw the Little "Z" racing come to an abrupt halt because of a family crisis. However 2006 looks like a
year of the traveling Little "Z" Legends Racing Team as we will probably hit the Midwest again, head to ND,
may try New Mexico, MO, Ill, as well as Pa. and NY. And as it looks we may start the year off in Fla..
2006
What a year. Good and bad. The car was working better with a new frame and new rear housing. Some winter
rebuild did not go as planned so we started the season with a punk running motor. We put together another motor
from parts and that ran better. With the new tires and new rims we could not keep the RR tire on the rim. Plus
a weak run of upper ball joints from 600 Racing saw several of these break and set us on the side lines. We had large car count
and the only good thing we can say for 2006 is we always qualified for the feature. When we didn't have problems
we did run more consistent with no wrecks to speak of. A good Christmas saw lots of new parts for the Little Z so we have a
good outlook for 2007.

Took a setup class by Mike Patrick of Little Race cars in Va. It was well worth the trip. Plan on going to Fla.
and do some dirt racing. However we already broke a spring on the trailer. I hope this is not any indication
of how the years going to be. New parts are going on nicely. So far so good.

March: 2007
2007 Racing starts in March. (MAYBE)
SEE
Schedule.
Early March race at Trailway Speedway cancelled due to snow.
(In Penna.????? With only 3 weeks until spring!!!!! Gee -- Imagine my shock! Again. jb.)
We were not ready but could have been. Then Lincoln and Path Valley were cancelled and
rescheduled for the same day. When all the confusion cleared we ran at Lincoln.
Lincoln: Repeat from last year only not as drastic. We arrived early. It was an everybody
qualifies at that time. By the time the third heat
race went off there were 8 more Legends that showed up. The third heat was packed.
We pulled a high pill # so we started in the last row of the second heat finished 5th and secured
a spot in the feature. To say the least it was a rough track and day for Legends on the dirt.
Started 14th and the car finished 6th in spite of the driver.
We would like to welcome Howard Hunter and crew of the new Triple H. Howard is new to Legends and
will be pulling to some of the races with us. We wish Howard good luck.
